Sunshine Insurance 2012 Race Weekend Official Results

Nearly 2,300 persons, representing 20 countries, participated in the 2012 Sunshine Insurance Race Weekend, January 14 & 15.
1,333 persons registered for the 5K Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure on Saturday morning, and 958 participated in Sunday’s 2012 Marathon Bahamas. These figures are up from last year’s numbers of 1,100 and 794 respectively.
Participating in Sunday’s marathon were 147 full marathoners, 561 half marathoners, and 50 relay teams, including a special 50-person Rotary Relay Team. The Rotary Clubs in The Bahamas celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.
The winners for the Sunshine Insurance 2012 Race Weekend are:

Overall Male Winner – Bob Gallagher (20:50 minutes)
Overall Female Winner – Kelly Kerr (24.58 minutes)

FULL MARATHON
Winner – 33 year old Bryan Huberty, (2:42:53) -USA
2nd place winner – 32 year old Sidney Collie (2:47:40) BAH
3rd place winner/overall female winner – 28 year old Angela Cobb (3:00:17) – USA
HALF MARATHON
Overall Winner – 37 year old Cobi Morles, (1: 17:00) -USA
2nd place winner – 36 year old David Ferguson (1:20:32) – BAH
3rd place winner – 42 year old Mackey Williams (1:21:29) -BAH

Overall Female Winner – 26 year old Jessica Crate (1hr: 21: 47) – USA

RELAY MARATHON

Brian Moodie, President of Marathon Bahamas, and Sunshine Insurance (Agents & Brokers) Ltd., the lead sponsor, thanked everyone who contributed to this year’s success, especially the sponsors, participants, and the 400 plus volunteers.
Proceeds will benefit four charities: The Cancer Society of The Bahamas, The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Sister Sister Breast Cancer Support Group and The Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative.

The Sunshine Insurance 2013 Race Weekend will be held over the Martin Luther King Holiday Weekend on January 19 & 20, 2013. Registration will begin May 1st, 2012.

Rotary 50th Anniversary Marathon Release


Rotarians are going through their warm up drills and gearing themselves to go through the paces for the month of celebrations to mark their 50th anniversary in January. High on the agenda is participation in the 3rd Annual Sunshine Insurance Marathon Bahamas. At 5am, under the cloak of darkness and early Sunday morning dew, in advance of the official start of Marathon Bahamas, fifty (50) eager Rotarians will begin to take their turn and show their fitness prowess at sprinting a half (½) mile dash and passing along the Rotary flag to a fellow Rotarian in a long relay, stretching the duration of the 26.2 mile marathon course. Marathon Bahamas’ elite athlete SPEEDS thru Space Coast Half Marathon

Cobi Morrales, 37, of Miami, a running shoe store owner, won the half-marathon in 1:17:36 after deciding at the last minute to enter the event. To Morales, the 40th Space Coast Marathon was less about mathematics than about doing well and simply enjoying a run along the Indian River Lagoon on a warm Sunday morning. Morales was the first man to cross the finish line in the half marathon, with a relatively narrow victory over two local favorites, John Davis of Melbourne (1:20.22) and Steve Hedgespeth of West Melbourne (1:20.44). MARATHON BAHAMAS 2012 TO LEAD THE WAY IN NASSAU

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Nov. 01 2011 – Running is simply better in The Bahamas. For the 3rd consecutive year marathoners and fans of running will have the opportunity to stretch their legs while taking in the most beautiful of settings, thanks to the Sunshine Insurance Race Weekend, taking place in Nassau, Bahamas Jan. 14-15, 2012. The centerpiece of the weekend will be Marathon Bahamas, a 26.2 mile race taking place on Sunday Jan. 15 that will take participants through a course that has been designed to showcase the diversity the island has to offer.
